The fate of things you can no longer see is not trivial.  It is the basis of the game of "peek-a-boo".  A very small child can not quite comprehend that Mom or Dad is still there even though they have covered their face, or gone below the crib, thus the surprise, delight and laughter when mom or dad suddenly reappears.
 
Is it no wonder that some horses have anxiety attacks when their buddy disappears?  Many, as posts have said, eventually learn this, but some don't.
