Steal his shoes and chase him a couple of miles down the road, perhaps he will have more empathy.  If he objects remind him that some folk have trained for the Olympics barefoot.
 
Seriously, if he does not like to nail shoes on he probably will not do a really great job.  You may have to go farrier shopping.  It would not be a crime to have one to do barefoot horses and another for the horse that needs shoes.
