[RC] Scoliosis and riding - Kristi Schaaf

Didn't Sally Swift (of Centered Riding fame) use
riding to help her scoliosis? As a 12 yoa, I was
diagnosed with it, but avoided the dreaded back brace
because the doctor said that my leg length was off by
an inch and I'd grow out of it. I didn't ever fix
myself (legs are still off) and my parents dropped the
ball by never having me checked again; I now have all
kinds of back issues (my chiro told me that most
people have one or maybe two, but that I have eight or
nine!), including the-never-cured scoliosis, which
can't be obviously seen by the naked eye but an x-ray
is very scary. It definitely affects my riding; I will
never sit square on a horse due to a pelvis rotation
triggered by the scoliosis. I'm one of the 'lucky'
ones, I suppose, in that my scoliosis didn't cause me
pain until about age 30. For the last decade, I've had
to learn to deal with it, compensate for it, and spend
lots of money on chiro and massage for it. That said,
I'm very very very lucky in that riding HELPS and
doesn't hurt my back (well, other than the mental pain
of knowing that my crooked riding HAS to affect my
horse). Kristi iluvdez at yahoo dot com

Life's a journey, so enjoy the ride (and try not to fall off)
