[RC] Mane mites (Northern Fowl Mite) - Barb Peck

Dianne:

The mite lays it's eggs UNDER the skin so no topical powder
or cream is going to kill completely unless there's absroption into the skin.
That's why the only thing that will kill it is 2 applications of liquid
ivermectin
7 days appart.

As far a I know the Northern Fowl Mite does not affect the hair coat- just
the
mane (and sometimes the tail) hair.

It sounds like you're describing something else in your horse.

The BEST** thing to do is to have the Vet do a scraping- look
at it under the microscope and ID the little bugger so you know what you're
dealing with.
Then you'll know for sure what to treat it with.

Barb - can you talk more about this? Every spring one of my horses gets an
awful 'skin thing" - he gets itchy, >scabby lesions and then he loses his
mane. This year it spread down his neck, on to his back - all the way to >the
tail. Wierd. I found a product, M-T-G,

you do have to watch out for the "Northern Fowl Mite" which will live in the
skin of a horse mane, create intense itching and cause them to lose mane hair
