Sounds like a typical male attitude. In addition to young boys being the greatest MCP's on the planet (they are trying to get gender roles firmly in place in their minds. In general this is a good thing) they are more likely to be future engineers. The engineer mentality looks at everything as a means to a desired end. They would only be interested in riding a "skipping" horse if they could see that this would get them where they wanted to go. At your son's age I was a cowboy movie fan. I would have been interested in riding a galloping horse, using a western saddle, while shooting a 1873 single action Colt. Dressage, or hunt seat, or a trotting endurance horse would have left me cold.
