Cases of scratches on our horses, caused by alkali dust and abrasion on desert rides, were healed by applications of "Cut Heal", a medication available from tack stores. It contains fish oil, turpentine, sulphuric acid, and balsam of fir.

Another thing that works is sauer kraut. You put it directly on the affected area, wrap it with vet wrap and duct tape it so it doesn't come off and doesn't come out the top or the bottom. It works great. Put it on for a few days and it usually clears it right up. I'm not really sure why or how it works, but it does.
