RE: [RC] [RC] Hi-Ties...also Epics - Terry Banister

Lysane,
On Hi-Ties:
Different brands of overhead ties have been around for quite a few years now, and work very well. If people have had any problem, it is mainly when a horse gets a leg over the rope when scratching the head with a hind hoof, not when rearing. The result is usually a rope burn. A few horses escape when the buckles are released when rubbing the head, but it is rare, and people have posted methods to prevent this. My horse has never had a problem in 5 years of using the Hi-Tie, but he has the temperment of an English butler. If your horse is a "Dennis the Menace" type, you would want to follow the advice others have mentioned: Tie shorter, Use cotton rope and don't leave unattended for too long. Most horses do very well with the Hi-Ties,and they are much easier for one person to set up camp. A metal loop would also be good to have on the trailer for shorter day trips. If your horse gets hyped when traveling to new places, keep doing it - preferrably with an experienced buddy horse.

On Epics:
The imprint from the heel strap is most likely just that. You mentioned that you live in a wet area. When you sleep with your face on your arm, isn't it wrinkled in that spot for awhile afterward? The heel bulbs become tough and calloused after awhile of barefoot living, but when they are wet constantly, they are still impressionable. If the boots are the correct size, the heel straps fit snugly, but they have "give," so they should not be causing harm. I ride in So. Cal., which is pretty dry most of the time, but during wet times and much water crossings, I have noticed the ribbed look on the heel bulbs. Nothing has ever happened from it, and they disappeared shortly.
Monitor the feet, but try not to be paranoid.
Terry

I am considering installing one on my trailer. I have a Sundowner and the sides are all smooth, with no place anywhere on the outside to tie. I am debating getting just loops installed onto the sides or getting the high-tie. I think I may just get the loops and when I have more cash get the hi-tie. But I was looking through the archives, but did not see anything about whether anyone has encountered problems with a horse rearing and getting his foot over the rope....is this ever an issue? My horse is good to tie, but young and still very new to travelling, so she can get pretty hyped about being in a new place.

I also had a question about Epics - I asked but did not get any replies. Karen? Terre?
Last week when I rode with Epics all around, I noticed that the hind boots left an imprint of the heel strap on the back of my horse's hoof and heel bulb. We have been having wet, snowy conditions, so maybe her feet are softer than usual, but this was the first time I use the boots on the hinds, so I'm not sure.

Also, is there any trick to getting the studs to be all even on the boots? I find that they don't all tighten exactly the same and I had to really work at trying to get the bolt tightened to the same spot on each stud.

Thanks,

Lysane
