Well, they are the same horse/breed. Just that foundation quarter horses have a certain percentage of the old bloodlines as someone mentioned. I think it has become popular to distinguish between the two because of a modern trend to breed very heavily muscled horses for halter classes. People that breed the foundation quarter horses with the old bloodlines are trying to keep a more "all-around" horse. Sure a quarter horse in general will be more muscular than say a Thoroughbred or Arabian, but there are different degrees of stockiness, if that makes sense. I would think the foundation bloodlines would be more versatile and be more likely to be successful at dressage than the halter bloodlines.
