[RC] transitioning to 50s - arachne

This question is for people who have experienced taking their
well-conditioned youngish (eight years old) horses from LDs to
multiday 50s. My horse this year will have done about 14 rides by the
end of the season (even 17 if it doesn't rain in Monterey over
Thanksgiving)and it would be fair to say he is in pretty good
condition. Not excellent, but very good. We have done several
multi-days and he has always had his best vet scores at the end of
the last day. These last couple of rides I have "pushed" him a bit to
see if he responded well and he did. Last year I did half LDs and
half 50s and he did just as well on the 50s. But I have only done one
multi-day 50 at High Desert and that was flat and easy.
OK, the question is: Say I wanted to participate next Mid-March in the
New Cuyama ride (50s only) all three days on this horse and then
continue doing 50s including some five day events, how many miles per
week should I train? Is this asking a lot for this horse? I am in the
process of rereading all the endurance books but would love some
opinions from those of you who have actually gone through this
experience. Due to the ever increasing gas prices, I am thinking
multi-days are in my future....
Thanks a bunch in advance!
