RE: [RC] Hoof Supplements Revisited - Jim Holland

Karen....

Do you know of any large scale studies that have been done in the United
States on the effects of Biotin?

Here are two more links of interest.

I currently do not feed a biotin supplement. My own "one rat" study on
Sunny, who has always had thin walls, poor heel growth, and a propensity to
acquire White Line Disease, showed no improvement over two years on a 20mg
Biotine/Methionine supplement. The only impact was on my pocket book.

I give all my horses an all around supplement each day that has
biotin in it, plus selenium-- it's all in one and simple and easy and
I they'll eat it (pellet form) by itself tho I usually put it in a
cup of complete feed for them. It's made by Horse Guard and I think
it's called Mega Dose.

There has been published research on the use of biotin. It does help.

Keep up with regular trims. If the hoof has a tendency to flare or
chip it will help a lot to keep up with that yourself with a rasp.
