There really isn't a number of foals you have to breed to write off farm expenses as long as you are showing a good faith effort to try to make it profitable. Of course, it's between the taxpayer and the IRS auditor to determine what that good faith effort is....
 
And the write off doesn't even come close to the cost of actually producing foals! It's like they say, the way to make a small fortune in the horse business is to start off with a large one.

as I understand it, the Tax write off is if you breed each and every year and must breed and have 3 foals, it might be 5 foals each year... that is where the problem lies in my opinion, make the write offs different... it sure changed a lot of things in the 70's when they changed the tax write offs!!!! Maybe it would effect the overpopulation problem we have now!!!
