[RC] Eating at a ride - Diane Trefethen

...it’s hard sometimes to shop there for endurance rides and much
easier to go for the canned stuff. Sometimes rides make me tired
just because I eat crappy, from a can.

When I was competing, I was a tent camper too and I know what you mean. I found the trick was to buy upscale "snacks" which tend to be more nutritious, and delicious, and also put-together food instead of cooking food. For instance, lavosh sandwiches. You can buy them pre-made at Costco and for more money and variety at better delis. Here is a link if you're the do it yourself type. Making your own means total control over how much of what goes in. My favorite is turkey, lettuce, tomato with a light spreading of mayo. Lavosh is amazing and these sandwich rolls are small and easy to store in a cooler, then slice when you want to eat. They taste and "feel" like expensive :)

Something incredibly simple is potato chips and sour cream. Again, when you are snacking on sour cream you feel like you are eating rich. Not sure what things are good for you but you can substitute thickly sliced mushrooms or zucchini for the chips and you are still eating hors d'oeuvres instead of canned crap.

I used to live near one of those upscale take-home dinner places. You find them in/near richer communities. They often have items meant to be served cold but even some things taste great as "left overs" without the dinner the night before. I happen to be a fan of eggplant parmesan the day after but don't buy it much because it has so many calories.

The point is, bring to the ride foods you would serve at a fancy party and absolutely LOVE, but would never think of eating normally because of calories or expense or whatever. The psychological lift you get eating really nice food is priceless.
