Re: [RC] ready for an easy 50? - Don Huston

Hello Kathy,
IMHO it sounds like your horse is getting a lot of good conditioning and should have no trouble with an easy 50 done slowly, like 10 hrs. Usually the problems are from the inexperienced horse getting too excited and wasting energy, beating up the rider, not drinking and eating at vet checks, etc. I would definitely try the 50 and assess the horse's attitude along with EDPP and plan on pulling at a vet check if things are not going well for either one of you. Just because a horse is passed thru a vet check does not mean he should continue if you have some reservations. Your first several 50's are still training rides for the horse mentally. Don't forget to have fun. :-D

Okay, okay?back to endurance issues. A question for those who have started mature horses in endurance: would it be reasonable to expect a recently put under saddle (started in December) 8 yr old, pasture raised his entire life, currently able to do tough 17-20 mile rides in the canyons, ridden 3-4 times a week, usually 2 or 3 10 mile rides & one longer, to be able to do a slow, relatively (compared to the hills we climb now) easy 50 in early November?
