Re: [RC] [RC] [RC] [RC] OT Horse Slaughter- mixing issues - Juli Jakub

Barbara,
I agree with that...starving people do not have the luxury and I am thankful that I can choose. I feel like I am being forced into a view however I did not take. I am undecided how I feel about horse slaughter...not against it, not for it. I do not make hasty decisions on anything. I would need to read the actual legislation. But I stand by that I think both options...slaughter or neglect sucks for the horse! Slaughter is probably the only alternative, but having been to slaughter plants and seen the trailering conditions I still cannot help but feel for animals going through that horrible process. I also do think that only healthy horses are slaughtered for consumption...wasted horses, sick horses ect. are slaughtered but not for consumption. I actually feel better about it if they are being eaten. Then death has not been in vain and their body has served a purpose. I grew up with a Blackfoot lady who taught me it is better to be respectful if you kill something for food...kill it humanely and use as much of it as you can...although I admit I still cannot stomach chicken feet soup!!! I would love to see real change in the slaughter conditions myself, but I do not think the legislation dealt with that specifically....does anyone know?
To keep this endurance...my filly heads to the clinic in Vermont to be tested for who knows what...no one still can figure out what is wrong...so my start in endurance is delayed...I am going to event my TB in the meantime...My other two horses seem under the weather now too...I am thinking some plant they are eating?? I hope this round of tests tells me something!

I was primarily addressing your one comment: "why do we always have to benefit at the expense of the other living things and the environment?..." Even vegetables are living things and growing food impacts the environment. I acknowledge your being thoughtful about what you eat, but your broad statement above goes beyond practical. I observe that in this country, most of us are beginning to care a lot more about our impact on the earth. Only well-fed people can afford to consider this. Hungry people don't have that option. It's eat or die.

Barbara,
I did not say I was a vegetarian....I eat meat that comes from home raised, free range stock that I am sure the quality of life and death were respectful. Mostly I find chicken... it is harder to get free range beef around here and I love wild venison killed in a clean manner. Beef and Pork make me sick digestively not morally...I do not eat it but would if it was small farm raised. I buy locally grown vegetables from local organic farmers when I cannot buy my own. Eating has an impact on the environment, but I try to minimize mine and make as healthy and respectful as I can. I do not see anything wrong with that. We put alot of things in our mouths that we have no idea where it came from ect...I do too but I try to minimize that.

How do you propose to feed yourself? Even if you are a vegetarian, you are still using other living things and the environment to feed yourself.

I have to admit I am divided on this issue. I dislike talk of horses being used for meat to benefit the human race...why do we always have to benefit at the expense of the other living things and the environment?...
