[RC] Endurance, CTR - Jeanne DeVico

Most CTRs are only 25 or 30 miles, so the ban on leg protection is simply to have something for which to deduct points! The shorter distances are not long enough to accurately assess the fitness of most horses, and there would be too many ties and perfect scores if they didn't "nit pick." It doesn't mean that a horse with a scratch or a small interference mark is less fit or less able. A CTR is a "horse show in the woods" -- a great training ground to learn things like pacing, trotting out your horse for the vet, being organized and arriving with a well turned out horse and rider, all things that winning CTR riders learn to do, and a lot of endurance riders have forgotten. Just remember that, as in horse showing, much of the judging in CTR is subjective, so ride your own ride and be your own judge. You'll win some and lose some.
