That's what I've been trying to point out for years.  "Distance
Riding" includes CTR, LD, endurance, mounted orienteering, and some
others.  AERC currently sanctions two of them.

I've always told people not in the sport that I'm a "distance rider"  
as I popped in and out of LD vs 50s vs multidays.  They all "got it".

I often do the same, depending on who I'm describing it to.
