RE: [RC] [RC] attracting new riders to 100s - Mark H Lacy

I usually sit back on this forum, behaving like a mouse, taking in all the
good information you folks send out. As I am just getting started, I have
plenty of questions on how to go about it. We are planning on attending the
OD Training Ride & Lecture this Saturday to find out more info and learn
what we need to do to get into condition (both for me and my horse). It is
always hard to think about starting a new sport such as this because while
we know how to ride on 10 mile trail rides, this is a beast of a different
color. I have not a clue at this point on what type of preperations are
required. I don't find this lack of knowledge duanting at all because there
are sources available to read (ordered some books and awaiting them now) and
people to talk too about the sport and what is required.

In our area, most of the horse folk are fox hunters. I get the feelign that
they tend to take a different approach to riding that involves a different
mindset tan a endurance rider would. So I need to find the right people to
learn from. Hopefully this Saturday will be very enlightening on what I
should be doing.

I think recruiting for this sport is difficult though. Advertising
might work, but how would you go about ensuring that the random
equestrian who stumbles over an endurance ad in Equus would prepare well
enough?

Good question - and one that didn't occur to me. I'm just naturally the kind
of person who likes to know what I'm getting into before I leap, so I try to
learn as much as I can. But I totally agree - it *would* be difficult to
attract new people while still impressing upon them the importance of
careful preparation. Don't know the answers to that one - I just hope that
something will work out. I hate the thought of losing 100s when my horse and
I are working toward them! :/
