I think recruiting for this sport is difficult though. Advertising might
work, but how would you go about ensuring that the random equestrian who
stumbles over an endurance ad in Equus would prepare well enough?

Good question - and one that didn't occur to me. I'm just naturally the kind of person who likes to know what I'm getting into before I leap, so I try to learn as much as I can. But I totally agree - it *would* be difficult to attract new people while still impressing upon them the importance of careful preparation. Don't know the answers to that one - I just hope that something will work out. I hate the thought of losing 100s when my horse and I are working toward them! :/
