RE: [RC] Stirring up a Hornet's Nest - Karen E. Franklin

Diazinon is very effective on pests.  Unfortunately, it’s also effective on small pets, chickens, ducks and children.  If you put down the granules please keep an eye on your animals!  My Dad put the granules down around his house to control ants and ended up killing one of his cats and a wild one that frequented the house, and also most of a small flock of ducklings.  I don’t know what would happen to a horse that grazed around a hole where you might pour in liquid diazinon, but it’s something to consider.

You must not live in California, as I think one cannot buy Diazinon in this state anymore.  Too bad, it's very effective for a lot of garden pests.

I have one word on this subject: diazinon.  I had moved to a new barn with my only horse at the time.  The paddocks were overgrown and I was mowing the paddock.  I ran over a ground nest with the lawn mower and they came flying out the back end of the mower by the hundreds and were stinging my neck and arms (bees are the only thing in the world that I am not allergic to).  But the worst of it was when my mare came over to investigate and they started stinging her.  That really ticked me off!  I went right out and bought a quart of diazinon and poured it down the nest hole.  Not only did it kill the bees, it left a dead zone around the hole about a meter in diameter.  Great stuff!
