RE: [RC] Fw: [RideManagers_of_AERC] Race of Champions? - heidi

Truman, the labeling this system as a "trailer race" was a REAL misnomer.  Those of us that ran for the Top 25 (yes, there were more placings than just #1) actually got to ride MORE miles per mile driven (or should I say drove LESS miles per mile ridden) than we do now, because every ride counted, even the ones close to home.  There was NO struggle to get a big lump of vacation time to drive clear across the country to rides.  Indeed, most winners did ride in adjacent regions--but most did not have to travel anywhere near as far as many folks do now to go to ONE ride.  That in and of itself was good for the ride attendance--and as you've noted, the 100-milers thrived.

I made the Top 25 back in those days, and never left my home STATE, never mind my home region.  I could ride LOTS of rides by just taking Friday off, instead of having to blow my entire vacation time on ONE cotton-pickin' ride.

The "trailer race" moniker was sour grapes and simply was not true.

I've been around for three different NC formats. The first was a "points
race" for the top. This became known as the "great trailer race" because
it was more about who could trailer the greatest number of miles than
who had the best horse. That was in the days when there were between 80
and 90 100 mile rides a year, vs. the 39 or 40 we have today. This
format would be even more an award for the best trailer and rider with
the most time to travel today than it was then. I don't remember the
name of anyone that won the NC in those days.
