RE: [RC] The Reality of Weight Divisions - heidi

This used to just fry me, Angie.  Lew Hollander was a HW rider.  He is also a world-class runner.  And I can't run worth squat.  Back when I really WAS a LW rider, I calculated the amount of time he spent off his horse at one ride, and his horse actually averaged LESS weight per mile than mine did.

But Bob's post summed it up--Lew had more will to win than I did, although I had a lot more back then than I do now.  It wasn't that my horse carried more weight per mile than his that beat me--it was because I was up against a super competitor.

Yep, but even within weight divisions heavyweights have to deal with
this. They use it to beat each other too. It would be nice if I could get
off and run...because, after all, my horse *is* carrying that 20% of his
bodyweight (me) and Bruce's horse carries 0 % when he gets off. HOWEVER,
I am a QH type muscled, and 5'1. Bruce is over 6' tall with long legs. I
would slow a horse down. He may not. You see how many things there are to
factor in? Maybe I'd be *willing* to get off and run, if I were BUILT to
run. My not being built to run may be as big or even a bigger handicap
than him carrying more weight. My horse never gets rid of me!  It's a
complicated world.
