I prefer not to do a ride without them. I am of the opinion that this is such an easy solution to such a potential disaster, that I am surprised AERC does not make it mandatory. It's an easy solution if you have enough volunteers. For one thing, a drag rider should never go out alone, if you have them you need two for each section (or who helps a drag rider who has an accident?). I have no doubt that if the AERC mandated drag riders some small rides would be forced to stop being held.
