Re: [RC] Underweight horse - TypeF \(Jackie Floyd\)

I had a friend with a horse like this in a similar situation. No matter what she fed the horse it was always underweight. Then someone at her barn talked her into feeding Fastrack Microbials once a day in her rations. Talk about an overnight success. The mare bloomed and put on weight and her coat became sleek and shiny. Getting the extra probiotics she needed did the trick for this particular horse.

Hello,
I'm hoping I can get some advice from you guys for my underweight
mare. I bought a 10 yr. old anglo arab mare about 3 months
ago. She had been in a dry paddock and fed 2x/day until I bought
her and transitioned her to pasture 24/7.

She currently is pastured on 30 acres with 20 other horses and we
feed 2 1/2 bales of alfalfa every morning. We spread out so they
all eat fairly peacefully, she probably gets about 2
flakes/day. Just about everytime I check on her
she is either eating the alfalfa or grazing. In addition to that
I feed her about 6 lbs of Ultium about 4x/week. But, she's still
only about a 3 in body condition.

I've done the following:
vaccines
Panacure purge
Teeth done by equine dentist
blanketed
very little work (walk & trot in arena 1-2x/week)

Still no weight gain, in fact she looks slightly thinner!! Do any of you have any suggestions for me? I was hoping to have
her in shape for a 25 miler by this spring but I'm afraid she'll
get even thinner with any conditioning.

Thanks for any suggestions! I really like this mare otherwise -
lots of fun to ride.
