one of the other biggest mistakes is to ride way to slow in to the first
vet check at Robinson Flat

You are sooo right.  I rode cautiously into the first vet check thinking
that was the right thing to do and never could make up the time.  Pulled
for OT at 95 miles.  Was a heart breaker, but tremendous learning
experience.  Those narrow trails and crowds to the first vet check make
passing tough, too, and it's easy to end up walking way too much in those
