Re: [RC] Cougar? - Jeannie Gillen

I had a horse with similar scratches once, on the hindquarters, both sides, like the cat had jumped on and then off real fast...about a week later, I came across a newborn calf with deep cat scratches (punctures) in both shoulders...I took him to a neighbor cattlerancher who said it looked like a cat attacked him....the vet agreed.  They nursed him back to health with a lot of TLC and antibiotics.

I know they are out there, along with bear, but they usually don't bother us.  My Rhodesian Ridgeback travels with me and my 357, just in case.  I think my dog serves as a warning we are there....so most wildlife moves on before I arrive on my horse.....especially noticeable at watering holes...Did have a cougar come in my barn one night, chasing one of the dogs.  Both were sooooo surprised they ran opposite directions in a NY minute.....kinda like the ET scene in the closet.

Subject: [RC] Cougar?

Twist, my OT standardbred, has four equally spaced cuts, completely throuth the skin,  just about where the girth would lie.

We couldn't find a single thing in the barnyard, his stall or any of the places he has access to that would have made that kind of mark.

We have six dogs - there was no barking during the night, although the night before the coyotes were really loud.

Would a mature horse, a very calm and trusting gelding, let a predator get up close enough to rake him?

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
