[RC] 'Rainbow' Review - Pat Hayward

The 'Ride Over the Rainbow' Endurance Ride was recently held on
July 1st (Canada Day). This particular Canadian endurance event has
been running for about 16 years and was originally started by Danny
Grant (5 Tevis buckles). It's my favorite ride because of its large,
wilderness campsite that's surrounded by aspen and ponderosa pine, plus
the varying scenic terrain that offers horse n'riders a true endurance
challenge. Because of its diversity of trail, this site has become a
popular training ground for the Canada West Endurance Team and for those
aspiring to ride the Tevis Cup. But don't let that llast bit of info.
scare you off. The 'Rainbow' trails are very doable; with a high
completion rate; and with 100 mile riders finishing in the daylight.
Although the Canada Day weekend was quite hot (with no rainbows in
sight this year), there was adequate water for the horses. In fact,
water for the camp is actually pumped in from a stream that's about 1/4
mile away. Other water was trucked to several locations along the
trails by the many volunteers. This particular ride is known for it's
numerous volunteers, some whom start preparing the trails months ahead
of the actual ride.
Long-time endurance riders, Barb Holmes-Balmer; Grant Balmer and
Terre O'Brennan have been wearing the Ride Manager's cap for the
'Rainbow' ride for several years now. Their dedication to this event is
inspiring and a great example of their comitment really showed when
Grant served 'Eggs Benedict' to the riders on Sunday morning, only
several hours after he completed the 100 mile ride (his first 100 miler
too!). He did this with a smile on his face and a great sense of humor.

So for those of you who didn't make this great Canadian ride, keep
it in mind for next year. It's worth it.
Thank you very much to the Ride Managers; volunteers and the
veterinarians who helped to make the 2006 'Ride Over the Rainbow'
Endurance Ride a great success.

Happy Trails,
Pat Hayward
