Re: [RC] [RC] Update on injured mare- lightening strike - April Allison
The Big Barn up the road from me lost 2 horses to
lightening strike last spring. They were running side by side thu the storm. It
is a flat, open, 20 acers. It is low and had about 2 inches of water standing.
They both had all 4 shoes on. lIghtening struck the ground between them. One
died instantly. It was found on its side in a full gallop position, no struggle
marks. The second was a couple of strides further and aparently rolled and broke
his neck when he fell. They both had small burn marks on the hoof, under the
shoes. No other marks on either of them. There was a burn mark on the
ground just a little behind and between them. No one saw it happen, but
the storm set a record for lightening strikes in the area and a lady 2 roads
over lost a horse to lightening the same night.

When our horses were struck, they
were about 50 feet from our hay barn and not under trees, nor in the middle of
a field, nor next to a fence. Why those three out of the herd? The
only thing we could come up with was they were the shortest
and fattest. They were also barefoot. It was also very
dry..no rain before the storm, so they could have been the biggest water
source to conduct the charge.
