Re: [RC] Cold Backed horse - Sisu West Ranch",,,When I've seen them react it seemed almost unintentional on the horse's part...more of a reflex..." When I purchased Stevie Ray he had two issues. 1. He tried to avoid the bit. 2. He had a fit as the girth was tightened. I suspected he was reacting out of fear of PAIN. 1. I immediately changed from the twisted wire snaffle, to an egg butt snaffle. I also resolved not to hurt him with the bit, but annoy him with one rein commands. He hasn't reacted to the bit in over a year. 2. I do not beleive that a girth has to be tightened as tight as many Cowboy's tighten a chincha. I just slowly worked him through it. After a year he may react a bit first thing in the morning, but not later in the day. I still do not tie him when saddling him. For the last month I have been using a backup saddle, as mine is in the shop. Apparently this feels different to him, and he has given me a bit more grief than usual. Bottom Line: If a "cold backed" horse is truely afraid of pain, my advice is to be patient and work them out of it. If the "cold backed" horse is just being a SOB, then other measures may be in order.
