Re: [RC] Protection of leather saddle in bad weather - Laney HumphreyIf your new saddle is made of high quality leather, which it should be if it is "definitely not low end," just keep it clean and well conditioned/oiled. Last weekend I rode in pouring rain for 8 hours. Like your OK experience, at the end, I poured water out of my Ariats. My saddle looked a bit bedraggled as it dried but I took it indoors and cleaned it well with glycerin soap (what a saddle restorer friend recommends), then slathered "Saddle Butter" on it, top and bottom and in all the crevices I could reach. By the next morning, it looked new and the leather was nice and soft again.I go back and forth about fleece saddle covers. Sometimes I like them, sometimes I don't. I'm not using one right now. I think, but don't really know, that a soaking wet fleece cover on a saddle for 8 hours might be worse for a saddle than not having one on. I'll have to remember to ask the friends I was riding with how their saddles did because they did have fleece covers. It wouldn't hurt to ask the maker of your new saddle how to treat the saddle if it gets wet. Many new saddles come with care instructions and sometimes even with a tub of the maker's preferred "goo." Having been inundated a few years ago at a ride in the Oklahoma mountains and soaked to the bone--me and all equipment with water sloshing in my leather Ariats, am wondering which precautions I should take to protect my saddle from similar storms. 1. Am thinking I'll bite the bullet and desensitize my horse to my wearing a full saddle-slicker that will offer some protection for the saddle. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
