Re: [RC] rain in CA - Eric Drew

Hi Barbara

it's been raining up here on the Summit since early morning with 3/4 of an
inch so far.....and judging by the number of accident calls out on 9 & 17
today people have forgotten how to drive when its wet out

And just think...we had 90 degree temps 2 days ago and now it's 50 and
wet...

It's pouring buckets here on central coast CA about 4 hours' drive north
of
Betty. It's interesting how experiences from one's childhood are so
indelible in the mind. My grandfather was an orchardist and my mother
always used to say it often rained near the end of May, "just in time to
crack the cherries." The skin of ripe cherries hanging on the tree will
split when it rains on them. Also, we used to have a picnic with friends
every Memorial Day, usually going to the beach nearby. I remember one
year
we had the picnic in our house because it rained so hard.
This isn't really all this unusual, at least not recently. We stopped
managing Castle Rock ride (traditionally held on the third weekend in
May)
after the year 2000, in part because of rain. In the five or so years
preceding 2001, the ride was rained out completely one time. We
postponed
it a month another time only to have the 24th of June be the hottest day
in
recorded history of this county...105 in the canyon where camp is and 115
on
the chalk ridges. It was brutal! I think Julie Suhr said the first
Castle
Rock was snowed out, as it was held along the summit of the Santa Cruz
Mts.
From the late 1960s through the 1990s, we just had a long dry spell in
May.
We are grateful for the rain in one way because it extends the growing
time
of the grass.

Barbara

Yes, it is pouring buckets on the Central Coast and Mark had just put
in
the swamp cooler and didn't worry about leaks. Huh!! I have 2 pots by
the
window sill and all my towels!! Who would have guessed!! I hope most of
the farmers haven't baled yet or prices will soar even higher!! First
gas
prices?? Now rain???!!!
Bette, who is trying to figure out if I can remove the heavy swamp
cooler
in Mark's absence.....
