[RC] Great night ride this weekend - Aaron Turnage

Well this was the last full moon before my ride, the Nevada Moonshine Ride on June 10th.  Went out riding with a friend on Friday night to check out some of the trail we are going to be using for the ride.  I also took out some glowbars to "test" which colors showed up the best.  It was fun riding along with glowbars hanging off the horses, we put them in their tails and such.  =)  Hung them off what we dubbed the "Christmas Tree bush" with all the lights and colors.  When we came back around the horses looked at it a little funny, until my boy tried to go eat one!

Things were a little dark until the moon was up, which we won't have to worry about during the actual ride as the moon will already be up by the time the sun goes down and should be up all night long.  I love riding at night out here in the "desert."  No tree cover makes for a glorious ride with our full shadows cast out next to us.  We were able to see quite clearly.  I had a battery-powered glowbar on my breastcollar and it cast a faint glow as well.  I've done my best to select good trails for the ride, very little rock, mostly sandy jeep roads and some single track so the footing will not be too challenging.  It was very pretty riding up the hill and being able to look down over the lights of the city of Reno and see downtown and all the glowing dots spread out for miles and miles.  Reno has such "ambient light" anyways, it's never really that DARK here.

Things are going well for the ride.  Any checks will NOT be cashed until after the ride, but you do need to get your entries in soon if you are planning on coming.  Camp can fill up kind of fast.  Only 4 more weeks until the ride!  =)  Get your discount and send in your entry by FRIDAY, MAY 26.  All you West Region riders (and PS and NW) that want to ride at night but maybe don't feel up to doing a 100, here's your chance!  Any of your that are planning on a 100 this year, this will be a great training opportunity for your and your horse!

Entry form can be found online at: http://www.aerc.org/Calendar/2006NevadaMoonshine.pdf

Looking forward to a great time under the Nevada Moonshine!
