Re: [RC] Proud Flesh Knees - christabas

Granulex is what you DON'T need.  Granulex is used to STIMULATE growth, and proud flesh is too much growth!  Granulex is for a wound where part of the flesh was torn or cut away and you need to "fill in the gap" so to speak.  Once the flesh has reached near the old level you stop using it and put on a drying type agent...in Texas it is common to use "Pink Lady"...not sure if you have that in your area.   The silver nitrate would also dry out the top of the wound, helping it to scab over, but there is no need to dip the sticks in water...you can just use them straight on the wound.  Good stuff for stopping beeding on small cuts also. (I use them when I cut my dogs toe nails too short and they bleed.  But be careful, it stings. :))  BUT, if the proud flesh is already past the normal level you definetly need to take him to a vet...it may have to be trimmed a bit before it will heal properly.  Someone also said don't put anyhting on it until the vet sees it...I concur...working in a vets office and trying to see the wound through whatever the owner slathered over it is very difficult!

Granulex is often prescribed for proud flesh and it seems to work. My old favorite it silver nitrate sticks. This was something prescribed to us for a wound impacted with proud flesh way back in 1959. You have to get if from a vet. These are long wooden sticks like kabob skewers with silver nitrate heads (like match heads.) You dip one in distilled water (must be distilled) and roll it across the proud flesh. For a larger wound, it may take several. The flesh turns ashy gray. You leave it until it crusts over with a scab, then peel that off and repeat the process. It takes a few days to achieve the proper scab. All this takes time, but it really works. I don't know why vets don't prescribe this any more. The SN does cauterize the flesh (doesn't seem to hurt the horse, as they don't make a fuss over it) and maybe that's why, but it WORKS, better than anything else I've ever used.
