[RC] getting more 100 mile riders - Dot Wiggins

One thing that keeps popping up in this discussion is ROC. (Race of Champions for those who weren't riding then)

Having a "qualified" horse was sort of a big deal, and riding ROC was a goal of many.

WHY? Do you suppose it was all the advertising, promotion, prizes, give-aways, awards, hoopla, dinners, dances, special trails? That event was promoted in every horse magazine in the country. There were dozens of sponsors. If you placed well it was a blast, if you didn't even finish it was a blast, there was such a "big time" atmosphere, party, celebration. People knew about ROC that never heard about Tevis, or Old Dominion, or Big Horn, or any other ride..

AERC Championship events have been handled pretty much like any other ride. Unless you're a dedicated endurance rider riding for AERC points, miles, etc they have not been an exciting event.

Put together the ROC atmosphere again with all the promotion and all the "stuff" I bet riders would come out of the woodwork to qualify for a 100.

Any one out there with the money, time, pizzazz, to try it for a couple years?
