[RC] Pseudotumor Cerebri - Bruce Weary DC

Jennifer--
As you probably know, pseudotumor cerebri means "false brain tumor." Although there is no brain tumor, the way your body metabolizes your cerebrospinal fluid is abnormal. There is a "backing up" of fluid inside the cranium, which causes central nervous system symptoms from the pressure not unlike a real tumor would. Vision problems, headache, nausea and other complaints are common. This poorly understood condition happens in young to middle aged women, and being overweight is a risk factor. The diuretic is prescribed to eliminate overall body fluid in hopes that it will relieve some of the spinal fluid. Chronic use of diuretics can cause other problems, like low levels of potassium and other electrolytes. Talk to your doctor about replenishment. I would think it might be a good idea to ride with a partner, and avoid temperature and weather extremes when riding, to be on the safe side. Obviously, if you feel an escalation of cranial symptoms or visual disturbance, seek medical attention. That will be $75. Please pay at the front desk on your way out. I accept Visa and Mastercard, or will take good quality hay in trade. Dr Q
