Actually, the duct tape might just be the trick, along with pads. We all know that what you can't fix with baling twine (was baling wire) you can fix with duct tape!  :)

I have also had problems with rubs, but have found some solutions. The new gaiter with the smooth folded seams instead of the overstitched style is much better. The new ones are available from Easycare and can be applied to your current boots without too many curses. No rubs so far.

Also I'm experimenting with an insole cut from a farrier's pad blank. It takes up some of the extra space since my horse seems to be between a #0 and #1.

I also use a 6" piece of duct tape applied to the hoof just below the coronary band to prevent the rubbing there. It works. I apply it so that it's smooth, and of course it doesn't follow the coronary band perfectly but does the job.

Apparently it's not a perfect world, so we have to keep trying to improve it.
