Re: [RC] pet peeve - Diane Trefethen

One of my pet peeves is to have created a window of space between riders so
that the horses are mentally comfortable. Upon coming to a gate, me and who
I may be riding with open it, only to have the people behind coming running
up yelling for us to hold the gate. We have lost the comfort zone and now
have the riders with us again.

There are basically three kinds of gates you can encounter: 1) horse friendly (can be opened and closed without dismounting if you've trained your horse to "do gates"), 2) horse friendly with spring (let go and the sucker swings shut), and 3) "cowboy" or as I heard them called "portuguee" gates (gates held to the opposing main post with baling wire). For #1 and #3, you just shout back to the oncoming riders, "SHUT THE GATE BEHIND YOU!" and take off. For #2, I would hold the gate in an almost shut position till the riders caught up and then say, "Okay... one of you guys grab this." As soon as someone did, it becomes their responsibility and you and your companion can go.
