Thank you so much for all of your input! Just to answer a few of your
questions, my horse is 12, so no need to worry about me overdoing it with a
youngster. He is a short-backed big-moving OTT TB I've had for 7 years and done
everything from Dressage to Team Penning on. Both his trot and his canter are
big and relaxed, not on the forehand...his trot is well extended which I know
is working his hocks probably more than the canter (in his individual case). I
train mostly in trot and canter and I never let him canter at the beginning of
a ride...I always try to leave towards the very end at the walk (he sometimes
thinks he's still a race horse)no worry, he'll catch up. He always walks down
steep hills and technical terrain. I am anxious to try a heart rate monitor,
but always use common sense and pay attention to my horse. I am anxious to try
another LD ride and maybe let him canter more and see how he vets and then when
I try a 50, I may be starting over since the distance is greater. Thank you
again for all your experienced opinions!
JJ
