RE: [RC] [RC] Feeding round bales - Catfish Daniels

Hi Amber:
Just was reading your post. During the years I lived in Arkansas, it was pretty much the only way to go and the horses loved it. The round bales were outside in all weather conditions and I kept a good eye on making sure the hay didn't get moldy or anything like that. One of my horses that I acquired at that time, turned up his nose at it and wanted "quality" hay with hershey's kisses sprinkled all over it. But when he figured out that there was no special treatment for him, he started eating it and eventually dove into it just like the rest of them.

As far as the feeders - I'm not a big fan of those. Most of the ones you'll see on people's pastures are dented up pretty badly and you wonder what kind of wreck happened there at one point or another. Most of the new ones are made to be pretty safe, but my simplest solution was a flat-bed trailer. One of those small utility trailers. Whenever I would go and pick up a round bale from the farm, I'd have it loaded onto my flat bed trailer to haul home. Then I just parked the thing in the middle of the pasture and the horses had free choice fresh cut hay.

That and some soybean pellets is all I used to feed and never had any problems or issues of any kind. The weight always looked well balanced on the horses and they were healthy and performing great. Some of the minor issues I ever encountered didn't happen until I moved to California, started using square bailed hay, fussing around with different supplements and trying to perfect this balancing act of proper rations of this and that, and everything under the sun. Needless to say, I've long gone back to "Keepin' it Simple" - or as simple as possible. Anyway, best of luck to you :-)

We have always fed square bales to our horses but will be round baling our own fields. I'm wondering if we should just start feeding round bales in one of those feeders, not just on the ground. I'm concerned about storage, too, as we store square bales in our barn but would not be able to get round bales inside the barn. Any comments on this?

Amber
