[RC] Dogs and horses - Mary Maynard

I work as a dog trainer and I am appalled at the number of loose dogs in the FL panhandle that most likely have no vaccination record and I am sure little to no training. I have a friend back in Calif that was attacked by dogs while riding and they tore his horses front legs up real bad. After that experience I am very careful if I see any loose dogs while ridng ( seen almost daily here in rural FL ). I carry a empty soda can filled with pennies and the top is covered in dut tape. Get your horse used to the sound at home ;-) Most dogs have adversion to loud startling sound - so I yell very very very loud at the dog and shake the can loudly and will throw it at them if necessary. I also run daily in the woods and I do find if I take a stance that I am bigger and meaner and louder then the dog - they back off. We have a large population of pit bulls here and it makes me very nervous. People need to spay and nueter and fence their dogs. Seems like people just like the idea of having a dog, but have no notion on the care and handling of them.
This is my pet peeve!
