[RC] Shagyas - Donna Coss

I can answer your question, Leonard, of why the prices are what you term, "high"!

Say you purchase a horse direct from Babolna, or perhaps a PB Arabian from Poland! First of all take into consideration
the exchange rate. Then these horses must be trucked to either Frankfurt or Amsterdam to fly to New York. Unless you
own the Emirate airline and fly door to door!!

Unless you can bargain and receive a good trucking rate, you are going to pay about $2000 to $3000 dollars for this alone, because
of the distance involved. The cost to fly to New York is about $6000.

Then a union trucker meets the plane and transports the horse to Newburgh, N. Y. for quarantine. This fee is about $800
The horse must stay in quarantine at least 3-4 days and this cost is about $1000. Then you have the cost of transportation
to where ever you reside.

If the mare or stallion is over two years of age, then they must go into a separate quarantine and stay for at least six weeks in
an approved quarantine center. Imagine what that costs? Maybe 5k to 8k for mares and 10k for a stallion. If transported to
an approved station, the truck or van must be sealed and cannot be opened without someone sanctioned to open it!

One can bring weanlings in, 3-4 to a crate, which is what I did, and this was in 2001. It still cost about 15k for the total cost, and
I purchased my colts in Germany. Still had what I considered a hefty trucking bill, about $800 plus the U.S. trucking bill.
The Europeans are good at adding fees to their invoices!

If anyone can come up with a way to import horses from Babolna for less then this, count me in!
