RE: [RC] Tip your farrier???? - Rae Callaway

Last year I paid my farrier $2200 and the year before, nearly $3000.  I’m certainly not his only customer and I’m also not the only one who has several horses.  So, if his nippers were $200, then I’ve more than paid for those.  Anvil at $800?  Yep, I’ve covered that one too.  Most of my horses are just trims and he can do those in 15 – 20 minutes.  Between me and his other clients, I’d say he’s doing pretty well – definitely not minimum wage after all the equipment is factored in.

My son tipped the farrier today by stacking hay & sweeping out the barn, my daughter tipped her farrier by babysitting 1/2 a day so the guy could get a break.  My wife, well shes somethin' special, she sleeps with him. If you haven't figured out yet, the farrier is Dad/hubby/me.

Jonni's article link gets to the heart of where $66, or $125 for that matter goes.  Anyone who snivels about shoeing costs needs to take a class in small business finance & work under a horse for an hour or two and see if you'd take $66.  For $66 he used nippers worth 2-3 times that, an anvil that was 4 times that at least, several thousand dollars in education, 20-30 for a decent rasp he dulled a bit today because you didn't bother to clean the mud off their feet & 30-100 for each gizmo you see in his shoeing box.  Band saw, grinder, welder, forge.......how many horses do you think a guy can do for $66 a day? Just to pay for every tool & his education can you figure how many horses hes got to shoe just to pay the costs. Befre a profit?

Tip him...hell yes.  If you don't like the work fire his you know what and get another & tip that one too!
