Re: [RC] Mackinder endurance saddle ? - Laney Humphrey

The Mackinder is from Australia, not New Zealand. I had one that I rode for at least 2 years and really liked a lot about it. It was very well thought out and well made. The saddles aren't "treeless" but have a tree made of heat sensitive foam so the saddle molds to the shape of the horse (within limits). The pommel is rigid so the range of shoulder width each size saddle will fit is limited which is another way in which the saddle is not "treeless." I think the person who originally bought my saddle thought the saddles would fit all horses & found that it didn't fit her very wide horse. She then listed the saddle on EBay where it was bought by someone else with a very wide horse which the saddle didn't fit. I tracked her down and she offered to sell me the saddle. It fit all my average width horses just fine. The seat is very comfy but only if you like a wide twist. My main objection to the saddle, for me, is that the stirrups are hung under the flap. This means no pinching of course, but it also meant that it was hard to move the stirrup forwards and backwards as I rode in my local mountains. Also, I have very short legs so the stirrup hung very close to the bottom of the flap and the edge of the bottom of the flap dug into my calf. This got a bit uncomfortable on a 50 mile ride. For someone with average or long legs this would not be a problem at all. I took the saddle to a consignment shop here in California and it sold within 3 weeks to someone who was thrilled to get it. I decided to sell it because I prefer a more narrow twist and I got tired of the flap rubbing my calf. I emailed the company once and got a very friendly reply.
I'd be glad to answer any other questions.
