RE: [RC] Anti-Biotics (was: needles) - Tracey Lomax

I've used oral and IM anti-biotics, and whilst I don't like injecting
penicillin (I get cold shakes just thinking about it), I agree with Kat
that you can't just do oral in all cases.

What I have wondered is whether the oral anti-biotics do more to upset
the gut flora than the injectible type? One of my horses, as a rule,
gets colic a week after a course of anti-biotics, so I've always given
his IM and given him massive doses of pre- and pro-biotics when he's on
anti-biotics. Am I being over-cautious?

I also generally don't give anti-biotics as a "just in case". There
must be a reason to give it, not as a preventive.

Regards,
Tracey
