Re: [RC] early spring foals - Diane Trefethen

Hi Heather,

I have a friend nearby who has FOUR fillies on the ground this year. She lives in Mariposa at about 2800'. We've had ice, snow, rain and temps dipping into mid 20's for about 8 wks now. I showed her you question and asked for her input. Here's what she said:

The sorrel filly we had last week was born in the middle of a snow/ice storm & it was really cold... I did put a foal blanket on her for the first night only - just so she would have a strong start - as my vet would say...
"we don't live in Alaska"... but I slept better at night knowing they were in the barn & she was warm.

A heat lamp in the barn is also effective to take the chill off. If it is a foal in pasture... the foal blanket would probably be best and I wouldn't use it unless the foal seemed like it was having a hard time staying warm.

Diane
