Re: [RC] Early foal - Jim & Drin Becker

Any one ever had a foal born this early? If so, any trouble keeping them
warm on cold nights? We've never had one this early, so we've never had =
any

Three years ago I had a foal born on Halloween morning , tempature was 7 degrees and this is in one of the coldest area's in Montana . I cut the sleeves off of a sweatshirt and kept that on him until his foal blanket arrived , he was kept in a lean to during the day with mom and then in a barn at night for about two months then just in the lean to . I had gotten a foal blanket which was huge for him so just pinned it up all around with diaper pins , worked great . This foal also had bad or no colostrum at birth so at three days old it was a flying trip into the vet hospital to save him . Even though he was weak for about a month this set up worked great and he is now a big healthy three year old . As long as you can keep them dry they should be fine and my foal Zatal weathered 20 below the winter he was born with no problems plus spent the first five months of his life walking and playing in 1 to 2 feet of snow :-)
