Hi Mel,

I'm no psychiatrist but it sounds pretty clear that the real problem is
"your" family.  This may sound facetious but I'm dead serious.  The answer 
to your problem is MOVE!   At least 2000 miles away from "your" family.

It's not just the horses, it's everything you do.  As you have seen from
what is happening to your sister-in-law, you will be picked on, criticized 
and second-guessed for the rest of their lives.  Every time you and your 
husband disagree about anything, family will jump in, usually on his side
and the result of that will be to eventually turn all those small him & you 
problems into one, big, can this marriage be saved problem.

Of course then, you won't have to worry any more about being criticized for 
abusing your horse <NOW I'm being facetious grin>.
