RE: [RC] [RC] gift idea? - Susan E. Garlinghouse, D.V.M.

At our vet office, we all sign a card with a nice little note from each,
basically just empathizing with their loss. I received one after my last
border collie died this past summer and it means a lot to me.

A picture of the dog in a frame, or a clay paw print if you can still get it
(the vet office often will have the clay to do it) is nice. Above all, what
I've treasured in the past were letters from friends and colleagues,
describing a good memory they had of the animal friend in question. When my
good dog Solo died a few years back, I received a wonderful note from a
classmate, describing the day we used Solo as a guinea pig while learning to
ultrasound abdomens and hearts at vet school. Solo was happy as a little
clam to lay upside down for hours getting his innards looked at as long as
someone rubbed his ears. My friend talked about how much fun the lab was,
what a good boy Solo was for all the goopiness. She reminded me how funny
it was that we didn't realize that Solo needed a potty break until we
ultrasounded his bladder and saw how full it was! <g> She said how he had
contributed to her education and that as such, Solo would never really die.
I truly treasure the note and still keep it in a very safe place.

A little token like a plant or something is nice, but honestly, write a
heartfelt note letting your friend know that you care and you'll always
remember the dog as a very special friend. I bet he'll keep it forever,
too.
