[RC] Old Pueblo--Day Two - Heidi Vanderbilt

I'll pick up the trail where Kathy Kelly left off, but just thought I'd say that I finished Day One half an hour behind her and saw the same hawk. By then the light had faded and the bird was silhouetted in that tree, watching us pass.

Day Two was even better than Day One. The trail followed a beautiful wash for about four miles, went under the two lane highway, and began to climb through rolling farmland. We rode along the Arizona Trail, climbing until we could see a half dozen mountain ranges in every direction. There were several miles of washes with great footing where the horses stretched out into their biggest trots. And there were some nice rocky stretches on a long climb where we slowed down and had a chance to really look at the awesome views.

The vet checks were hour holds, one at a cattle ranch. While we rested, the ranchers gathered cattle, herded them past us into pens, and spent their Sunday holding a roping with a few friends. My mare Delyte was fascinated--as were several other horses. It was a great scene-- endurance riders in biothane, spandex, sport-specific tack and helmets, riding Arabians, and next to us, cowboys on quarter horses roping steers. Right out of a movie!

The trail was perfectly marked both days. There were abundant, generous awards, great food at all times--the grill seemed to be fired up for 72 hours straight--and a sweet, family atmosphere with kids, bikes, dogs, and friends everywhere. Marilyn held the awards banquet on Sat night, and on Sunday handed out awards as each rider completed, so poeple who needed to get on the road, could.

Two days were great, 3 would be even better.
