Re: [RC] jiggy horse questions... - rdcarrie

We have a wonderful little Raffles-bred gelding, who will be 31 in May.  He used to jig something awful...still does in fact with most who ride him.  What I do when he starts to jig is halt him very briefly, then let him move on.  At first he'd go right back into a jig, but quickly learned that if he stayed in a walk, he could walk as fast as he wanted...just couldn't include that bounce...if he jigged, he'd get halted again, which he hated.  <G>  He just loves to go, and go fast.  That little guy has the fastest walk of any horse I've ever ridden...although my little 5 yr old CMK gelding walks darn fast too.  Both have a lot of "action" at the walk...movement of their barrels.  Both are on the shorter side (14.2h and 14.2 1/2h), with nice short backs.  Our old guy, once he learned that the rules were to walk, would stretch his neck out and get his head going in time with his legs.  I c all it his power walk.

*Hi Lynne,
Good point! Have seen this much also...if a horse is reined in tight, it's
practically
impossible for them to relax and walk out fast.

I also owned a very compact, stocky and 3-circle little polish Arab
mare....jigged
something awful when I got her....I spend months trying to fix it (I could
feel when she
would start to jig and check her-then relax reins)....she finally figured
out I was not going
to make it comfortable, but that she could walk on a loose rein. When that
wasn't fast
enough for her, she figured out how to do some sort of gait (maybe
singlefoot)....so after
that she never jigged with me...although got away with it from some others..
Karen
