Hi Naomi--
Funny you should ask about a hoof crack up to the coronet band.
I have a horse that is recovering from that very thing. He is
a foxtrotter with trophy feet (now), but I have only had him for
about six months, and the previous owner had shoes that were too small put on
him. He is 16 hands and 1100 pounds easy, and he was in 0's in the front and
00's in the back. He now wears a 2 in front and a 1 in the rear. Apparently the
previous shoer put those small
shoes on him and filed off most of the outer hoof wall to make the
shoes fit. He made it through his first two 50's with my 100 lb
daughter, and at the end of the second ride, one rear hoof wall failed
and cracked in the upper third of the hoof through the coronet
band. It was even oozing very slightly, and he was very tender
on it.
He is increasingly sounder as the foot grows out, and I'm sure he'll recover.
Sometimes when the coronet band is involved
the newly generated hoof wall can have a cosmetic defect in it, but I don't
anticipate any long term problem.
By the way, those of you discussing gaited horses, don't discount a good
foxtrotter. I just returned from 20 Mule Team,
and had a great day on my foxtrotter mare who finished the 65 in about 10
hours, pulling on me the ENTIRE way, and never taking more than 5 minutes to
recover. She does a runnng walk, rack,
foxtrot, square trot, and a canter to die for. Every time she
canters, I hear the theme song from "The Magnificent Seven"
in my head. She is lean built, and really impressed me, as it
was only her second ride. I predict we will see more gaited
horses, that are endowed with the traits suited for endurance,
on the trail in the future as America ages. I hear lots of
complaints about aching backs and knees at rides. I have
been trotting for 20 years, and let me tell you, the money
I now save on Advil will put my kids through college. (Well,
barber college, anyway.) Bruce Weary
